Kuwandi Quilt
What is a Kuwandi Quilt?
A Kawandi quilt is a traditional, hand-stitched quilt from Western India made from recycled fabric, typically old saris. Kawandi quilts are constructed from the outside in, which is different from Western quilting traditions.
Here are some characteristics of Kawandi quilts:
Construction: Kawandi quilts are assembled from the outside in, with the edges turned under and stitched together. Quilting proceeds in a spiraling line, about a finger width apart.
Corners: The four corners of a Kawandi quilt are established first and often feature nestled Ls.
Techniques: Kawandi quilting involves hand stitching, slow stitching, and applique techniques.
Materials: Kawandi quilts are made from scrap fabric, including old saris.
Origin: The craft of Kawandi quilting was brought to the region by African slaves.
I have fallen in love with this hand quilting technique and have made several small ones since learning about it. This Kuwandi quilt has lace, embroidery, yard, fabric, 100% cotton batting, and an old elephant fringe scarf for the backing.
I’m now teaching classes on this technique, check my classes and event page for details.
